How to Get More Leads from Your Website Without Spending More on Ads

You are getting visitors to your website. But the phone is not ringing and the contact form sits empty. Sound familiar?

This is one of the most common frustrations for small business owners. You have put in the work to get traffic. But traffic on its own does not pay the bills – leads do.

The good news is that most small business websites have the same handful of problems, and most of them are fixable without spending a single extra penny on ads. In this post we will walk through exactly what to look at and what to change.

Why Most Small Business Websites Do Not Convert

Here is the truth about most small business websites: they are built to look good, not to generate leads. There is a big difference between the two.

A website that looks professional but has no clear call to action, buries the contact details, and takes 6 seconds to load will convert almost no one. Visitors arrive, look around briefly, and leave – usually to a competitor who made it easier to get in touch.

The three biggest conversion killers we see repeatedly are:

  • No clear call to action above the fold – visitors do not know what to do next
  • Slow load speed – anything over 3 seconds and most visitors leave before the page finishes loading
  • An unclear offer – the website does not immediately answer ‘what do you do, who is it for, and why should I trust you’

The fix is not more traffic. The fix is making better use of the traffic you already have.

5 Free Fixes You Can Make This Week

None of these require a developer. None of them cost money. They do require about 2-3 hours of focused work – but the payoff is immediate.

Fix 1: Put your most important CTA above the fold

‘Above the fold’ means the part of your page visitors see before they scroll. Most small business websites waste this space with a generic banner image and a vague headline like ‘Welcome to our business’.

Replace that with a clear statement of what you do, who you help, and a single action button – ‘Get a Free Quote’, ‘Book a Free Call’, ‘Get in Touch Today’. One button. One action. Make it impossible to miss.

Fix 2: Put your phone number at the top of every page

This sounds obvious but most websites bury the phone number in the footer or on the contact page only. Put it in the header, visible on every page, clickable on mobile. A visitor who is ready to call should not have to hunt for your number.

Fix 3: One goal per page

Every page on your website should have one job. Your homepage should push visitors to contact you or explore your services. Your services page should push them to get a quote. Your about page should push them back to contact.

If a page has five different things it is trying to get visitors to do, it will achieve none of them. Simplify ruthlessly. Remove anything that competes with the main action you want visitors to take.

Fix 4: Speed up your load time

Go to PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) right now and run your website. It is free and takes 30 seconds. If your score is below 70 on mobile, your site is losing leads because of speed.

The most common cause is uncompressed images. Large image files slow everything down. Use a free tool like Squoosh.app or TinyPNG to compress every image on your site before uploading. This single change often cuts load time by half.

Fix 5: Add social proof above the fold

Reviews, testimonials, and client logos are the fastest way to build trust with a visitor who has never heard of you. Most small businesses keep their testimonials buried on a separate page no one visits.

Move your best 2-3 reviews to the homepage, close to the top. If you have Google reviews, add a star rating widget. If you have recognisable client logos, put them on the homepage. Visitors decide whether to trust you in the first few seconds – social proof does the heavy lifting.

When DIY Fixes Are Not Enough

The five fixes above will make a real difference. But there are situations where the problem runs deeper and no amount of tweaking copy and button colours will solve it.

You probably need professional help if:

  • Your website is more than 3-4 years old and has never had an SEO audit
  • You are getting zero organic traffic from Google – your pages are simply not ranking
  • Your website is not mobile-friendly and needs a structural rebuild
  • You have tried multiple changes yourself and still see no improvement in contact form submissions
  • Your competitors consistently outrank you for local searches

In these cases, the issue is usually technical – broken SEO foundations, poor site structure, or a hosting setup that handicaps performance. These need a proper audit and a structured fix, not just surface changes.

Quick wins checklist – do these today:

– Run your site on PageSpeed Insights and fix the top image issue

– Add your phone number to the header on every page

– Check your homepage has one clear CTA button above the fold

– Move your best testimonial to the homepage

– Make sure your homepage headline says exactly what you do and who you help
